Semen Gresik Organizes Tree-Planting Activity in Reclamation Areas to Commemorate World Environment Day
Rembang, June 22, 2023 – To commemorate World Environment Day, PT Semen Gresik organized a revegetation activity in reclamation areas of the Rembang plant on Tuesday, June 20, 2023.
Representatives from the management of the company, employees, and farmers living near PT Semen Gresik’s Rembang plant took part in planting dozens of tree saplings.
Head of the Production Support Unit of PT Semen Gresik, Kuswandi, stated that to commemorate World Environment Day, the company planted dozens of tree saplings to show its genuine commitment and attention toward environmental sustainability.
“To plant the saplings, we use a new method of mounds added with compost blocks, which are made of manure, compost, and bacteria to enhance the compost, so that the survival and growth rate of the saplings can be improved,” he explained.
He further added that for 2023, PT Semen Gresik was planning to perform reclamation of post-mining areas by planting 2,938 tree saplings. “The tree saplings are from the cultivation [done] at PT Semen Gresik’s plant nurseries,” he said.
The revegetation of post-mining areas was expected to preserve the ecosystem of flora and fauna and to convert the measurements into green belts around the plant’s site.
As an actualization of its environmental responsibility, thus far PT Semen Gresik has reclaimed a 3-hectare clay-mined area and a 5.5-hectare limestone-mined area. The company has planted various types of as many as 33,610 trees, several of which were teaks, mahoganies, rain trees, sengon, cassia trees, kesambi, breadfruit trees, sapodilla trees, jack trees, mango trees, longan trees, bamboos.
Additionally, PT Semen Gresik has involved 361 farmers from six neighboring villages to manage 119.25 hectares of corporate land, which is expected to provide them with economically-added value.
